The National Association of Realtors® (NAR) Board of Directors met in Washington, D.C. on May 11, 2023 and took the following action:

The board made it a REQUIREMENT that all new applicants for membership will be required to complete two hours of FAIR HOUSING TRAINING, and existing members must complete two hours of Fair Housing Training every three years as a condition of membership. The cycle for this requirement coincides with the Cycle 8 COE triennial that begins January 1, 2025 and ends December 31, 2027.

Newsday–an American daily newspaper serving Nassau and Suffolk counties in the NY City borough of Queens on Long Island, published the results of a three-year investigation into alleged discrimination by real estate agents in the communities on Long Island, NY in 2019. A major result of this investigation brought forth the need for real estate licensee education on Fair Housing. The purpose of this class is to provide real estate professionals working in today’s diverse real estate environment with the knowledge and information they need to understand the importance of fair housing laws and ensure they are responsible practicing real estate in a nondiscriminatory fashion. Objectives: After taking this class students will be able to: •Define and understand the topic of Fair Housing. • Describe the history of Fair Housing Laws and why they are important. • Understand Florida State and County level Fair Housing Protections. • Explain the Seven Protected Classes and the characteristics of each. • Recognize activities prohibited under Fair Housing Laws and what actions are illegal. • Understand how Fair Housing Laws affect Advertising & Marketing and describe best practices. • Explain Steering and Redlining and recognize the danger in making assumptions based on stereotypes. • Define and recognize explicit and implicit bias. • Explain the effects of bias in Fair Housing and how to prevent it. • Identify exemptions to Fair Housing Laws and adherence to Reasonable Accommodations. • Know what resources are available to provide Fair Housing information to client.
